Finding out the best food storage methods can be key to maintaining the freshness of your fruit and preventing quick spoilage, notably when it comes to temperamental bananas. It’s easy for bananas to rapidly transition from perfectly ripe to overly soft and brown-spotted. If you find your bananas deteriorating before even making it through a fortnight, it might be time to reassess your storage methods.
Thankfully, a savvy food storage expert has shared an ingenious tip to prevent bananas from browning, or even blackening in more severe cases, claiming it can preserve them for more than three weeks. Common advice might include wrapping banana stems in clingfilm, foil or damp kitchen towel, but this new tactic is somewhat unique. TikTok user Amy Cross, who goes by @amycrosslegacy on the platform, often shares insights on purchasing, cleaning and properly storing fruits and vegetables.
She earlier divulged her jar trick that claims to prolong the life of bananas. In her method, Amy chops the bananas with their skin left intact and places the segments into a glass mason jar, which she then refrigerates. After 26 days, she showcased that not only did the pieces remain fresh, but also the peel hadn’t succumbed to any browning.
In the video , Amy explained: “So the whole goal of putting the bananas in the jar was to see if I could get a cut banana to last 12 hours, and it’s been 26 days.” For those who prefer their bananas whole, it’s recommended to store them in a cool, light-protected area. Ideally, bananas should be kept at around 12 degrees as they tend to ripen faster in warmer conditions.
A dimly lit room devoid of direct sunlight is perfect, making a warm kitchen not the best place for your bananas. If you're looking to store peeled bananas, the juice trick is worth a shot. Once a banana has been sliced and exposed to air, it quickly turns brown.
Sprinkling some lemon or pineapple juice on them can work wonders, particularly in fruit salads..
