Time and time again, it proved easier said than done.The 6-foot-2 senior point guard closed his four-year career with a sensational season in leading the No.
4 Dragons (21-8) to the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference semifinals. Equally efficient shooting the ball from the 3-point line (34.8%), midrange and getting to the basket, the Bucknell commit averaged 29.
5 points per game, scoring 25 or more points 17 times with a season-high 36 coming in a 65-61 win at John Carroll.Curtin also brought fine leadership and winning intangibles that brought confidence and breakthrough success for the Dragons. He averaged 7.
1 rebounds and 3.1 assists, and his heady play on defense led to at least one charge per game.Disappointed that the Dragons didn’t reach their championship goal, Curtin said the individual accolades he’s received are a testament to his passion for the game.
“I worked in the gym every night to prepare for the season in hopes of winning a championship, and even though we fell short, I tried my absolute hardest. That’s really all you can ask for,” he said. “This is a big honor [being named The Baltimore Sun’s All-Metro boys basketball Player of the Year] and I’m so grateful.
I’m happy with myself because it helped show the work is paying off.”Counting his freshman year at Marriotts Ridge and three seasons at Glenelg Country, which he leaves as the program’s all-time leading scorer, Curtin scored 2,294 career points.“Pat is a throwback-type player,” Glenelg Country coach Garrett O’Donnell said.
“His work ethic is in line with his goals — a three-level scorer on one end and a determined defender on the other. His willingness to be coached and do whatever his team needs is what makes him special.”Senior guard Pat Curtin averaged 29.

(Kim Hairston/Staff)Coach of the YearTony Martin, Mount CarmelIn his 23rd year of coaching and second season at Mount Carmel, Martin reached personal milestones and led the program to new heights as the No. 1 Cougars (34-4) swept the MIAA A Conference and Baltimore Catholic League titles.
Martin, who had previous coaching stints at Spalding, John Carroll and Cape Fear Academy in North Carolina, reached the 500-win plateau and owns a 526-235 career record. He became the first BCL coach to win titles for three programs, having won one at Spalding and two at John Carroll.This season, he effectively blended a deep and talented roster as the Cougars set a program mark for wins while capturing their first MIAA A Conference and BCL championships.
The program’s only previous championships came in the MIAA C (2004-05) and B conferences (2005-06; 2007-08).“I’m proud of these guys and I mean it from the heart when I say they are good kids that care about each other and there wasn’t a lot of selfishness within the group. That was a treat to coach,” he said.

Savvy and poised, he averaged 12.

3 Cavaliers to a 23-9 record.Edmondson guard Darnell Dantzler Jr. earned first-team All-Metro honors for the third time.

Set to play at the University of District of Columbia, his across-the-board talent led to 22 points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals per game this season.Justus Stanton, New Town, senior, guardAfter missing his junior season with a shoulder injury, the 5-11 guard proved to be the glue in leading the No. 6 Titans (27-2) to the Baltimore County championship and an appearance in the Class 2A state title game.
A calming presence who made smart decisions with the ball and played structured team defense, he finished with 15 points, four assists, two rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.St.
Frances guard Trent Egbiremolen averaged 13.7 points per game to go with 6.4 rebounds.

4 rebounds, one assist and one steal per game this season.Mason Ellison, Loyola Blakefield, senior, guardThe Delaware commit became the Dons’ all-time leading scorer, finishing with 1,696 points to break 1978 graduate Tony Guy’s 47-year-old mark. Named the Baltimore Catholic League Player of the Year, he finished the season with 21 points and five rebounds per game as the No.
14 Dons finished with an 18-17 record.Josh Frazier, Centennial, senior, guardThe high-volume scorer averaged 25.4 points this season, scoring 30 or more in six games this season to close his three-year varsity career as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,192 points.
In addition, Frazier brought leadership and more as the Eagles (13-9) reached the region title game, averaging 6.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.

2 assists and 2.7 steals per game. He stepped up in big moments, including a deciding steal and layup that capped a 25-point effort in a 62-60 county title game win over North County.
Rodney Scott, Mount Carmel, senior, guardThe area’s finest floor leader and four-year varsity player, Scott set a trusted tone with poised play on offense and tenacious play on defense. An All-BCL first-team and All-MIAA performer in addition to being named to the All-BCL Tournament team, Scott averaged six points, four assists and two steals per game with the No. 1 Cougars sweeping the BCL and MIAA A titles.

4 points, 8.8 rebounds and four assists per game. After scoring 27 points in a semifinal win over Milford Mill, the 6-foot-4 New Mexico State commit had a 20-point, seven-rebound, three-steal effort in the title game win over Sherwood.
Mario Tatum, Mount Carmel, senior, forward The 6-2 guard, always tasked with defending the opponents’ top scoring threat, was a season-long steady force in the No. 1 Cougars’ historic season. A four-year varsity player who surpassed 1,000 career points, Tatum capped his career by being named the BCL Tournament Most Valuable Player after totaling 33 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists in three wins.
