Today marks the opening of Baltimore County's latest green space, Sparrows Point Park, at the historic Bethlehem Steel site. This 22-acre waterfront gem is set to be unveiled by county leaders this morning, as reported by WMAR-2 News . The park is not just the first of its kind in six years.

Still, it has features including a synthetic turf field, a community center complete with activity and meeting rooms, and a nautical-themed playground sprawling across 10,000 square feet. For those keen to fully indulge in the waterfront setting, there's a fishing pier with a kayak launch and a scenic walking path just waiting to be explored. The transformation of Sparrows Point is a result of the collaborative efforts made by various stakeholders.

Tradepoint Atlantic generously donated the land parcel, while Baltimore County managed to snag $10 million in grant funding to buttress the approximately $25 million project financially. This was a push made possible, likely in part, to secure federal and state dollars, including funds from the Maryland Program Open Space. And lest anyone forgets to light up the night properly, say hello to a full-size athletic field completed with LED lighting—a modern addition to the traditional park aesthetics.

As detailed on Baltimore County's official website , residents of the Edgemere-Sparrows Point communities are poised to benefit from a project that fills a longstanding recreational gap in the area. The park's infrastructure doesn't hold back either. Boasting a 16,000-square-foot community center featuring a double-court gym and activity rooms, the park also ensures accessibility with an ADA-compliant fishing pier and kayak launch to welcome one and all.
