Bacon will be crispier and taste better if you stop cooking it in a frying pan

Bacon is simple to cook, but it turns out that not cooking it in an oily frying pan will improve both the taste and texture.

Nothing is better than waking up on a weekend morning and making yourself a bacon butty - but it turns out there is a better way to cook bacon without frying it. Bacon is a British breakfast staple but having to clean a greasy frying pan afterwards can be a nuisance that many people would rather not deal with. However, Meghan Mcmorrow, a cook and founder of Fox and Briar has shared there is a better way to cook bacon that involves no frying pans to clean afterwards and even makes the bacon tastier.

She said: “The best way to make bacon is to bake is in the oven, on a rack. “This allows the heat to circulate all around the bacon and the fat to drip away, leaving you with perfectly cooked bacon.” The white fatty part of bacon naturally renders when exposed to heat, which means that bacon cooked in oil can become charred or even burned.

This can cause the pink meat to be undercooked, chewy and not as appetising but cooking in the oven makes the heat circulate all around the bacon strip so it will be perfectly crispy. Not only does cooking bacon in the oven improve the texture but it also enhances the flavour as the bacon will not be soggy from the oil, so will taste cleaner and more savoury. All you need to do is line a tray with baking paper or tin foil.

This makes clean up much easier as all you will have to do is get rid of the cooking paper rather than scrub a pan. Next, place the bacon on the prepared tray. Make sure the bacon is lying flat and not touching each other.

Place the bacon in the oven and set the temperature to 180C. Cook the bacon for 20 to 30 minutes until they are crispy. Different bacon will take longer to cook in the oven so keep an eye on it.

Once the bacon is ready, take it out of the oven and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to get rid of any excess fat. Then place on a roll and your beautifully cooked bacon is ready to eat..
