ORGANISERS of the St Martin’s Bonfire welcomed a “strong crowd” on Saturday evening as perfect weather helped to make it a success. In addition to the main bonfire, the charity event – sponsored by Jersey Mutual and run by volunteers – featured live music, a Guy competition and a fireworks display alongside other entertainment. Side Salad Bob and the Vinaigrettes were among the live entertainers Picture: James Jeune (39272213) Last year, the bonfire was postponed multiple times – and eventually cancelled – amid poor weather, not long after Storm Ciarán struck the Island.

But organisers were met with favourable conditions on Saturday as the event went off without a hitch. Lester Richardson, who chairs the Gorey Fête and St Martin Bonfire Committee, said it had been “a very successful evening”. “Clearing up on the Sunday, we’re really pleased with the way things had gone.” He explained that, while the exact figures were yet to be established, organisers were “certainly hoping to give a nice sum” to the Jersey Child Care Trust – the event’s chosen charity for this year..
