Azmi, Azizul and Nurul Huda elected to key posts as Norza begins third term as OCM chief

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Karate Federation (Makaf) president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad is the new Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) deputy president.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Karate Federation (Makaf) president Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad is the new Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) deputy president.What was expected to be a close fight with Datuk Awalan Abdul Aziz (lawn bowls) turned out to be a comfortable 70-20 victory for Azmi at the umbrella body's annual general meeting-cum-elections in Kuala Lumpur for the 2025-2029 term today (April 19).Azmi, who was previously OCM vice president, said he was honoured to be elected to the No.

2 position. Incumbent Tan Sri Hamidin Amin opted not to defend the post."It was not an easy win, I think being a former chef de mission (2021 Hanoi Sea Games) was an advantage for me," said Azmi.



"The affiliates have seen what I am capable of and that my intent is sincere. I thank them for their support."To Datuk Awalan, I hope we can work together in the future for the betterment of Malaysian sports.

"I am aware that this (deputy president) is a bigger responsibility compared to being a vice president. I am prepared to work closely with Tan Sri Norza Zakaria to further strengthen OCM."Norza was reelected unopposed as OCM president for a third term.

He has led OCM since 2018.There were, however, four new faces elected as OCM vice president with Azizul Annuar Adenan (taekwondo) gaining the most support with 81 votes.Sepak Takraw Association of Malaysia president Datuk Sumali Reduan (80), Malaysia Aquatics' Nurul Huda Abdullah (62) and Wushu Federation of Malaysia president Datuk Chong Kim Fatt (incumbent, 56) were the other's elected VP.

Incumbent Datuk Mumtaz Jaffar (52) and Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) president Gerard Monteiro (49) missed the cut.The fight for male assistant secretary-general post was won by Malaysia National Cycling Federation's Arif Astaman who defeated Malaysia Snooker and Billiards Federation president Melvin Chia 51-39.Arif will support secretary-general Datuk Nasir Ali (weightlifting) was elected unopposed, replacing Datuk Nazifuddin Najib who opted not to defend the post.
