There’s a better method to retain their freshness for up to a whole month more. Say no more to binning overripe avocados; the secret to longevity lies in cleanliness and proper storage. Give them a thorough rinse to kill bacteria, dry them off, and store them in an airtight container.
Delving into her go-to method, Amy shared her fool-proof “secret elixir” for washing those creamy fruits. She said: “It’s composed of two ingredients: cool water and 5% distilled white vinegar .” Despite seeming odd, giving avocados a good vinegar bath can kill surface bacteria or contaminants, thereby preserving them for longer.
Start by peeling any labels from the avocado skin, then letting them bathe in a chilling concoction of water with a splash of 60ml white vinegar. You’ll need to set your timer for exactly two minutes before immersing the avocados and ensure not to keep them submerged any longer, as you might end up tasting vinegar in your fruit. Once the time is up, give them a thorough rinse under the tap to wash away the vinegary mix.
