Captain Carter Despite listing a whole lot of names in chairs, Avengers: Doomsday and its Secret Wars follow-up are apparently still hiding a few things, and now, Deadline is reporting on one of them. They’re saying that Hayley Atwell will return to her role as Captain Carter in live-action, for the second time, in a deal that will have her appear in both upcoming Avengers movies. And this is after a 14 year history with Marvel that has rarely, if ever, properly used her character despite her being a part of multiple projects.

At this point: Atwell’s Peggy Carter was Steve Rogers’ original love interest in one of the first MCU movies, Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011, then returned as his “final” love interest in Endgame when he went back in time. Back in 2015 Atwell had her own show, Agent Carter, back in the Agents of SHIELD era, chronicling her time as a government operative for two seasons. Atwell voiced Captain Carter in the animated What If.

..? series where she essentially became the lead of what was originally pitched as a full anthology series.

She died at the end of the series in a heroic sacrifice (apparently). Captain Carter Atwell appeared briefly as Captain Carter in live-action for the first time in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as a member of an alternate universe’s Illuminati alongside Professor X and a fan-cast John Krasinski as Mr. Fantastic.

She was cut in half by her own shield when she fought the Scarlet Witch, who butchered the entire group. It’s a lot of screen time but again, it still feels like she was underused, somehow. Being relegated to a love interest at first is never all that great.

Captain Carter was solid but cancelled when it could have continued. What If..

.? ended up not being a terribly good series in the end and making Carter the focus attracted a lot of flak since it was supposed to be an anthology. And even Atwell has said she was “undermined” with her quick death in Multiverse of Madness.

But after two deaths, Captain Carter is apparently back, pulled from...

where? Maybe the What If...

? universe if she somehow survived the events of that show, or maybe another one. It is a bit random, however. Maybe Marvel decided it was time to give her a real shot in the role.

Maybe someone watched Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning. I don’t know. But hopefully she’s treated right this time and most importantly, survives.
