Sisters Everly and Eliza Garrison formed a dynamic combo on the morning of Oct. 26 by collecting leaves, branches and assorted trash around the Wando Mount Pleasant Library . The two Laurel Hill Primary School students — joined by mother Karina Garrison of the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce — were reportedly proactive in proposing the project to the library.

"Our parking lot had a lot of extra litter, so they reached out to me," said Wando Mount Pleasant Library Branch Manager Kate Dentzman. The library rep went on to detail ongoing efforts by the Palmetto Garden Club (PGC) of Mount Pleasant insofar as helping out with landscaping in the adult and children reading gardens. In addition, Dentzman went on to cite Children's Reading Garden volunteers Katie Miller of Green Roots Gardening and Allison Williams of Flying Fig Farms in Awendaw.

Both individuals weeded the Children's Reading Garden area, along with prepping it with healthy soil and mulch. As for PGC, Phase 1 completion of their Adult Reading garden rehab saw project manager Tracy Doyle and company improve the drainage in an existing landscape berm. They also amended the soil at the Carolina Park-based venue, as well as planting native species and shrubs, and topping it all off with a layer of mulch.

The Wando Mount Pleasant Library invites all community groups and schools to chip in with the periodic upkeep of the interior, parking lot and perimeter areas. "We are so grateful to these volunteers for helping Wando Library and our community," said Dentzman. "Join us on Nov.

9, from 9 a.m. to noon for a refresh of the Adult Reading Garden.

High School students can earn volunteer hours." Volunteers interested in helping the library enhance its landscape can contact [email protected] or call the library directly at 843-805-6888.
