Autumn chill sees Quebec temperatures dive into the negative digits

The first frost finally arrived for Montreal, Que., but the thermometer will race back into the 20s this week, potentially making for a record-warm Halloween

The , especially after Montreal woke up to its first below-freezing temperature of the year Monday morning. With a low temperature of -4.7°C, the chilly overnight low also yielded the city's first frost of the season.

A chilly area of high-pressure conditions are moving across Quebec, providing the calm conditions to dip temperatures to the coolest readings since March. While the cold temperatures won't last long, there will still be a risk posed to crops and plants on Monday night, so shelter them appropriately. We can't also forget a surge in energy costs to keep buildings heated during the cooldown.



The warmth will return in time for Halloween, with temperatures expected to soar into the 20s, potentially high enough to set a record. With Monday's below-freezing temperature, we don't have to worry about reaching it too late in the year. It was the first time since April 26 when Montreal reached -1.

By contrast, the earliest instance of readings falling below the freezing mark occurred on Sept. 23, 1974. The good thing, however, is it's short-lived before another warm-up on the horizon.

Tuesday will be slightly warmer, and Wednesday will see even higher temperatures, with many places expected to reach 20°C with a gusty, southwest wind. 20°C temperatures are forecast once again Thursday. We will be watching the potential for for Montreal.

As of now, the forecast is for 23°C, which would surpass its old record of 21.7°C from 1956. A more tricky forecast for parts of western Quebec with rain approaching late Thursday ahead of a cold front.

Scattered showers could linger into Friday with chilly temperatures. Fair weather is expected through the weekend with temperatures slowly climbing back to near seasonal or a few degrees above seasonal for Sunday..
