JAIPUR: Shatrughan Shah , 40, vegetable vendor , is running from pillar to post for help after losing his auto rickshaw in the devastating inferno triggered by a collision between an LPG tanker and a truck near Bhankrota on Jaipur-Ajmer highway on Dec 20. Despite suffering burn injuries to his face, Shah's name does not appear on the list of injured, leaving him without any compensation. Speaking to TOI Monday, Shah recounted the terrifying sequence of events leading to the accident.
He was on the highway when he found himself amid the disaster. "I was transporting vegetables when I saw gas leaking from the LPG tanker. The entire area was soon enveloped in a thick fog of gas.
Then, an unknown ignition sparked a fire," Shah said. He described how, in a panic, he tried to flee but his muffler and shawl caught fire. "I threw away my muffler and shawl but my face still got partially burnt," he added.
As he ran towards a nearby school, he witnessed people engulfed in flames and crying for help. Shah, along with others, quickly took action, rushing the injured to the hospital in whatever vehicles they could find. "It was chaotic but I couldn't just stand there.
I had to help," Shah said. Shah's troubles did not end with the fire. When he later checked on his auto rickshaw, he discovered it was damaged when a truck collided with it while attempting to reverse.
"I lost my vehicle and now I'm left with nothing," Shah said. To make matters worse, his name was not included in state govt's list of injured since he was not admitted to SMS hospital, leaving him without access to compensation. "I earned my living by selling vegetables.
Now I don't know how to survive," he said. ADM North Mukesh Kumar said Shah has submitted an application, which will be processed soon. For now, Shah continues to wait, hoping that authorities will not forget him in his time of need.
