Vision claiming to show a 2022 aircraft encounter above the South China Sea has been slammed by Australian MPs. The video shows a J-16 fighter jet intercept an Australian surveillance aircraft on what is said to have been a routine patrol of international airspace, the ABC reported. In video shared on Chinese state television as part of a Chinese army documentary, the pilot boasted how he was not afraid of a "strong enemy".

"We must show our swords to the enemy," he added. Simon Birmingham, the leader of the Opposition in the Senate, slammed the Chinese government over the video, labelling it an “unacceptable glorification of unacceptable military conduct”. Speaking on ABC radio this morning, the senior Liberal figure said the concerning actions depicted in the clip “risk possible miscalculation and escalation” and could heighten military tensions in the region.

He also lamented the “propaganda” video “appears to describe Australia as an enemy and an opponent”, asserting that is not how the Australian government sees itself. Shadow defence minister Andrew Hastie said if the footage was genuine, it shows "highly dangerous" conduct. The Cowboys have been left pleading for help after they were left in a tricky spot ahead of their NRL showdown with the Sharks in Sydney this Friday.
