Just days before Australia kicked off the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) against India, they were hit with a major blow as Pakistan defeated them 2-1 in a three-match ODI series on home soil. This was the first time since 2002 that the Men in Green have not had an ODI series on Australian soil. The hosts had started the series with a nerby two-wicket win at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) while chasing a score of 204.
However, their star-studded batting unit collapsed in the second game and were bowled out for 163. The Mohammmad Rizwan- leveled the series 1-1 by registering a nine-wicket victory. Despite the series on the line, Australia took the bold call to rest their Test players and made five changes to their playing XI in the third ODI.
Skipper Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Steve Smith, and Marnus Labuschagne were all missing from action as Josh Inglis led an inexperienced team. The rotations proved costly for Australia as they were bowled out for just 140 runs. The 1992 World Champions cruised to the target of 141 with eight wickets in hand.
Australia Hit All-Time Low Australia's shambolic display with the bat in all three matches saw the hit an all-time low as for the first time history, no batter from the six-time world champions managed to score a single half-century in the series. This marks the first instance of no Australian player registering the milestone in an entire bilateral ODI series in history. Josh Inglis (49) and Steve Smith's (44) knocks in the first ODI were the only Australian players to cross the 40-run mark in the entire series.
Smith's 35 in the second ODI also marked the third-highest score by an Australian batter in the series. Pat Cummins' match-winning knock of 32 in the series opener and Sean Abbott's innings of 32 in the 3rd ODI were the only other instance of an Australian player making more than 30 runs in an innings in the series.
