ST. CLOUD — The Austin Bruins outshot the St. Cloud Norsemen, and Bruins goalie Jack Solomon bounced back from a rough outing with a strong performance Friday night.
Aside from that, the bright spots were few for the Bruins in a 2-0 loss to the Norsemen. ADVERTISEMENT It's the Bruins' third consecutive setback, and fifth in the past six games. Austin (5-5-0) started the season with a bang, winning its season opener at North Iowa on Sept.
21, then winning three consecutive games at the North American Hockey League Showcase in Blaine, Sept. 25-28. But the Bruins have hit a rough patch since, getting swept at Minot (N.
D.) two weeks ago and at Bismarck (N.D.
) last weekend, with a single-game victory against the Minnesota Mallards in between. Friday, Austin outshot St. Cloud 25-24 in the game, but St.
Cloud's Peyton Mithmuangneua scored with 4:06 to go in the first period, a goal that held up as the winner. Then, just 1:34 into the second, Mithmuangneua set up Tyler Geyer's first goal of the season, an insurance goal that made it 2-0 for the Norsemen (6-2-2). That was it for the scoring, as Bruins' goalie Jack Solomon stopped 22 of the 24 shots he faced, bouncing back from allowing six goals in his previous start.
St. Cloud goalie Beck Liden was equally strong, recording a 25-save shutout. The teams cap their home-and-home weekend series at 7:05 p.
m. Saturday at Riverside Arena in Austin. BOX SCORE: St.
Cloud Norsemen 2, Austin Bruins 0.
