For us Aussies, there's nothing more exciting than seeing one of our own onscreen, especially when the actors are allowed to use their own accents in American productions. In the first season of The White Lotus , viewers were excited to see Murray Bartlett as Armond, the hotel manager, and this season we have a Kiwi in the mix, with Morgana O'Reilly, who plays Pam, the member of staff helping the Ratliff family. In the fourth episode of season three , which came out on Monday, there were a few Aussies, but their characters weren't all that flattering.
Many fellow Aussies took to social media to make fun of the bad rap we get in the episode, with some saying they felt "victimised" by it. White Lotus' Australian representation isn't so great About 19 minutes into the episode, Jaclyn (Michelle Monaghan) and her friends are visiting a beach and pool club where a couple of older Australian women (one of whom is played by former A Country Practice star Wendy Strehlow) strike up a conversation. "Are you on television?" one of them asks Jaclyn, who responds, "Yes, I am, how are you?" "We thought so! On holiday?" the woman questions, with Jaclyn telling her she is indeed on holiday with two of her friends.
The women tell Jaclyn that they recently became friends while travelling together with a group, and that they're both widows. When they hear that the three women are staying at the White Lotus, the other woman says, "Oh, we wanted to see the White Lotus, but you can't get in unless you're a guest. We weren't posh enough!" As the women laugh, Jaclyn, clearly uncomfortable, tells them to "have a great vacation".
RELATED: This then leads to Jaclyn realising the other people in the area aren't the type of people she'd like to hang out with and forces her friends to leave with her. "What the actual f**k is this place? Is this like a bargain hotel for retirees?" she says, grimacing. Elsewhere in the episode, the Ratliff family are on Greg's (AKA Tanya's ex-husband) boat, where they meet an Aussie guy (played by Boy Swallow's Universe actor Rob Carlton), who is with a much younger Thai women.
When Parker Posey's Victoria Ratliff asks if the pair are married, the woman responds, "Nope, not yet, but we should be." "You should put a ring on her finger," Victoria tells the Aussie guy, who says, "'It's on the table,' is what we say." Victoria laughs and he tells his girlfriend, "You are all I need," we then hear some very wet kisses and Victoria appears grossed out and asks her husband, "How long is this boat ride?" So, it would seem that the Aussies serve the purpose of disgusting the White Lotus guests at this point! Aussies poke fun at 'horrible' representation on White Lotus Aussie viewers have taken to social media to poke fun at the way their people were represented on the show, with one Reddit user writing, "Anyone else find it hilarious the amount of Aussie stereotypes this episode? The older 'bogan' Aussie women at the pool side.
Then the classic old white Aussie guys on the boat going to Thailand to find women. Loved it." "As an Aussie, yeah, pretty spot on," another added.
One X user jokingly added, "White Lotus season 3 does such a good number on dorky Australians that travel constantly to Asia that I feel personally victimised by the writer." "I can’t believe it took this many episodes for this season of The White Lotus to feature this many horrible Australians," another said. SHOP: "The realest thing about white lotus is the characters all running into random Aussies on their holiday," a third quipped.
"Yesss to hearing Australian accents!" another shared on Instagram. Want the latest lifestyle and entertainment news? Make sure you are following us on Facebook , Instagram and TikTok and don't forget to subscribe to our newsletter..
