Audi has just revealed yet another variant of its A3 hatchback line-up. The allstreet now comes as a plug-in petrol. The name suggests urban driving – because it has off-road design and increased ground clearance – but it is a “crossover”.

It is putting the emphasis on its strong energy recuperation from braking and foot lift-off, DC charging and drive management. The A3 allstreet 40 TFSI e1 is designed, like all plug-ins, to be able to work in all-electric mode on local trips, and combined with the petrol engine it can be quite efficient over longer distances. You can prioritise electric driving on start-off, but most people will go with the “auto hybrid” mode, as it is regarded as being the better-balanced use of the combustion engine and the electric motor.

The A3 crossover uses DC charging up to 50kW. That means a battery can be recharged to 80pc from 10pc in under 30 minutes..
