Article content Volkswagen-owned Audi is recalling a whole bunch of its models from the 2021 model year due to a potential software problem that may cause the instrument cluster to shut off completely. As per Transport Canada, the recall affects 3,905 cars and SUVs , as well as another 44,387 vehicles in the U.S.
However, the root of the issue stems from something a little deeper. In the recall report sent to the U.S.
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Audi says there could be a specific flat cable in the virtual cockpit that is degrading and thus failing to function effectively. Due to the vehicles’ software being so sensitive, “a slightly increased contact resistance” could shut off the instrument display. If that display fails, the driver will lose access to vital information such as the speedometer and warning lights, all of which could increase the risk of a crash.
In Canada, the recalled vehicles include: Audi will notify owners by mail, who will be advised to take their vehicle to a dealership to update the instrument cluster software, free of charge. Note that any owners who may have already had this repair completed prior to the recall will not be offered a reimbursement, as the affected vehicles would still be covered in the Audi New Vehicle Limited Warranty period. The recall report informs that by the end of March 2025, Audi had received over 2,200 complaints about this particular issue, but no injuries had been reported.
