Arabian Post -Audi has initiated the deployment of virtual programmable logic controllers at its Böllinger Höfe facility in Germany, marking a significant advancement in automotive manufacturing. This initiative, part of Audi’s Edge Cloud 4 Production strategy, aims to enhance production efficiency and flexibility.The EC4P platform enables the virtualization of control systems, replacing traditional hardware-based programmable logic controllers with software-driven solutions.

This transition allows for centralized management and real-time monitoring of production processes, facilitating rapid implementation of software updates and new functionalities. The vPLCs are TÜV-certified and incorporate security features developed by Siemens, ensuring compliance with stringent safety standards.Audi’s technology partners in this endeavor include Broadcom, Cisco, and Siemens.



Broadcom’s VMware Cloud Foundation provides a private cloud environment that centralizes the management of industrial PC devices on the factory floor, simplifying security patching and risk management while reducing hardware requirements. Cisco contributes networking solutions that support the integration of IT and operational technology domains, enhancing data-driven production capabilities. Siemens supplies the virtual PLC technology, compatible with Audi’s cloud infrastructure, facilitating the virtualization of shop floor automation.

The implementation of vPLCs is currently focused on the production of a Lamborghini model at the Böllinger Höfe plant, serving as a testing ground for digital manufacturing technologies. The virtual controllers replace previous hardware-based systems, enabling more flexible and data-driven production processes. This approach allows for real-time control and monitoring of manufacturing operations, independent of physical location.

Audi began testing the EC4P local server solution at Böllinger Höfe in July 2022, with series production tests commencing in July 2023. The use of virtual controllers is expected to significantly increase the efficiency and speed of production processes, aligning with Audi’s goal of creating a more efficient, cost-effective, and secure manufacturing environment.The collaboration between Audi and its technology partners exemplifies a broader trend in the automotive industry towards integrating advanced IT solutions into manufacturing processes.
