A 6-year-old Auckland boy who underwent a routine operation to remove his tonsils collapsed at home, stopped breathing, then died in hospital surrounded by family after life support was switched off. It’s understood the operation took place privately last week at Southern Cross hospital and that family were told there was a complication during the procedure. The boy was rushed to Starship children’s hospital on Thursday but could not be saved and died with his parents by his side on Monday after scans revealed he was effectively brain dead.
