Nearly two dozen Summerville-area athletes recently signed to participate in college athletics. Ashley Ridge, Fort Dorchester and Summerville high schools all hosted signing and commitment ceremonies Nov. 13 for students who have accepted offers from collegiate sports programs.
The 23 athletes made their choice of which team they intend to play for after graduating high school official by signing a national letter of intent pledging their talents to that program. More than 15 colleges signed athletes from the three schools across nine sports. Five signed for baseball, four signed for softball, four signed for volleyball, four signed for basketball, three signed for soccer and the signees included a track athlete, tennis athlete and lacrosse athlete.
The University of South Carolina signed one of the state’s top softball recruits, Summerville senior Ansley Bennett. The pitcher/infielder has been named the Gatorade South Carolina Softball Player of the Year the past two seasons so she had many teams interested in her but she chose the Gamecocks. “This is so amazing,” Bennett said.
“Now I get to keep playing the game I love. USC is very close to home and I’m a family girl, plus the atmosphere and community around all their (athletic programs) made me want to go there.” Abilene Christian University picked up two Summerville basketball players, twins Emma and Molly Daugherty.
“Since we were young we always wanted to play together,” Molly Daughtery said. “We love the Christian environment at Abilene and the coaches really seemed invested in us.” Her sister echoed her comments.
“They have a great coach and the players were amazing,” Emma Daugherty said. “They brought us in as if we were already their teammates. It was a blessing to be there and the campus is beautiful.
