At the Movies: It's a man, and woman's word, at the box office

FAIRFIELD — Two thrillers, "The Woman in the Yard" and "A Working Man," arrive on screens across the country Friday. "The Woman in the Yard" centers on a lone, spectral woman shrouded entirely in black who appears on a family's lawn and warns them, "today's the day." It becomes clear she is no ordinary figure and her intentions are anything but peaceful.

The film is rated PG-13. Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, and David Harbour star in "A Working Man," about a former black ops operative who comes out of retirement when his new boss's daughter goes missing. The film is rated R.



Opening in limited release are: "The Friend," with Naomi Watts and Bill Murray in the tale of a writer and teacher who is comfortable with her solitary New York life. It's thrown into disarray after her closest friend and mentor dies suddenly and bequeaths her his beloved 150-pound Great Dane. The canine wreaks havoc but his looming presence constantly reminds her of her friend’s problematic choices in both life and death.

The film is rated R. "Black Heat," the story of a mom and dad who rescue their missing 15-year-old daughter. The attempt includes infiltrating a high-level drug dealer’s apartment complex.

The film is not rated. "Day of Reckoning, " which unites Trace Adkins and Billy Zane in the story of a sheriff on the brink of losing his job and marriage. He teams up with a U.

S. Marshal to capture a female outlaw. The film is rated R.

"The Penguin Lessons," which is based on the true story of a disillusioned Englishman who went to work in a school in Argentina in 1976. Rather than an easy ride, he finds a complicated and divided nation – and a class of practically unteachable young boys. Jonathan Pryce and Steve Coogan star.

The film is rated PG-13. "The Ballad of Wallis Island," a comedy-drama about an eccentric lottery winner who lives alone on a remote island and dreams of getting his favorite musicians back together. The fantasy become a reality when the band mates and former lovers accept his invitation to play a private show at his home on Wallis Island.

The film is rated PG-13. "Audrey's Children," which tells the story of a doctor fighting her own revolution amid the dated, crowded hallways of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She's the first female chief of pediatric oncology there, yet her colleagues appear to withhold deserved respect.

She embarks on a mission that will change the lives of millions of patients and their families. The film is rated PG. "Julie Keeps Quiet," which centers on a star player at an elite tennis academy.

When her coach is suspended following the suicide of one of his female protégées, all the academy players are encouraged to speak up about their experiences with him. She decides to keep quiet. The film is not rated.

"Grand Tour," which is set in 1917 colonial Burma. A civil servant for the British Empire jilts his fiancée when she arrives for the wedding. He escapes into an unexpected odyssey across Asia.
