In the future, when anthropologists look back on this moment in time, they’ll likely note three things: a turbulent political landscape, an obsession with protein , and an abundance of bobs. Setting the first two aside, bobs are flourishing among women of all ages, from Millie Bobby Brown to Leslie Bibb, Keke Palmer to Selena Gomez. Sharp, broken , puffy , midi, French , flipped , slicked , kicked – the possibilities are endless.
This week, we’ve been treated to a new bob courtesy of Dame Helen Mirren , who has returned to the red carpet sporting a silver midi bob that kicks out at the ends. To attend a preview of the new Cartier exhibition at the V&A, Mirren paired her mid-length bob with a slick of fuschia lipstick and a cherry-red headband to match the colour of her dress. Think of it as the antithesis to power clashing – more power pairing .
Now, this isn’t Mirren’s first bob. Fans will know the actor has typically chopped and changed between pixie cuts and rounded bobs. In 2023, she briefly wore her hair ultra long and waved , a marked departure from her usual style.
By 2024, she was back to her sparkling silver short lengths. Other guests at the event included Dame Joan Collins, Maya Jama, Munroe Bergdorf and Vick Hope – the last of whom has just been named as a trustee of the V&A. The Cartier exhibition, co-curated by former British Vogue editor Rachel Garrahan, charts the French jeweller’s history from the beginning of the 20th century to now, and features more than 350 jaw-dropping jewels.
