Despite the government’s "Har Ghar Nal, Har Ghar Jal" initiative aims to provide tap water to every home, people in Namdang Old Line and Gara Line in Kumarpatty Gaon Panchayat, within the 83rd Margherita Constituency, still struggle to get clean drinking water. The problem is especially serious for the tea garden workers of Namdang Tea Estate, who have to drink polluted water from a nearby stream. The stream is contaminated with harmful chemicals from plantation activities, putting residents at risk of diseases like skin problems, jaundice, and stomach issues.
Although a water purification project under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) was set up in the area some years ago, it has not provided any real benefits. Even though the JJM project is said to be finished, the community still hasn’t received clean water. Now, the locals are asking for immediate help from the authorities to solve the water crisis.
They want officials to keep their promise of providing clean drinking water without any more delays. The health of the Namdang residents depends on quick action to fix this ongoing problem. Meanwhile, earlier this month, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that over 80% of households in the state now have tap water connections under the Central government's Har Ghar Har Jal initiative.
This was mentioned during a meeting with Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil in the capital.
Launched in 2019 under the Jal Jeevan Mission, the program Har Ghar Jal focuses on providing 55 litres of piped water to every rural household of the country by 2024. The tremendous progress of Assam, therefore, reflects the efforts of the state to bring this vision into a reality. During the meeting, Chief Minister Sarma requested the Union Minister to continue his support so that the scheme could be covered in all parts of the state.
Patil assured him that the Ministry of Jal Shakti would provide all possible help to make the scheme a success..
