Zubair Anam, the president of Assam Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC), was detained by Assam Police earlier today at his Guwahati residence. The detention comes just ahead of a protest organized by the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress Committee, scheduled for later in the day. Sources indicate that the police took this action to stop Anam from participating in the protest.

The authorities have not provided an official explanation for the detention. This incident follows a similar occurrence in December, when Anam was detained alongside All India Youth Congress leader Uday Bhanu Shiv at a hotel in Guwahati. Meanwhile, the attack on MP Rakibul Hussain in Rupahihat sparked controversy in the Assam Assembly during the Budget session.

The opposition Congress, through an adjournment motion, demanded a high-level inquiry and punishment for the attackers. Speaker Biswajit Daimary had to adjourn the session twice due to disturbances. The government assured that a police inquiry was underway, and the culprits had been identified.

The Congress criticized the Chief Minister’s previous statement on the attack and insisted on immediate action. Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi demanded the suspension of local police officials, escalating tensions. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary emphasized the CM’s commitment to proper action, including potential punishment for dereliction of duty.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the identification of the attackers and stated that an FIR had been filed. However, he noted that Hussain’s refusal to undergo a medical examination hindered proper legal proceedings..
