Home | “Asmal believed international law was important for liberation” Retired Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke says the late Kader Asmal believed that international law was important for the enhancement of liberation. He delivered the keynote address at the 10 th Kader Asmal Annual Memorial Lecture last night. The Council of the Advancement of the Constitution in partnership (CASAC) with the University of the Western Cape (UWC) hosted the lecture.

The focus of this year’s lecture was the current regional and global conflicts. Moseneke says, “As it is for us to witness the nightmare of the latest incessant and unending war on Gaza there appears to be no hope for an end to the hostilities between Israel and Palestine. But we can’t find our way through without hope.

For realistic hope, we need to begin with an honest conversation that would aim at accountability and a meaningful and lasting just peace.” “But like Kader Asmal, I believe there is a proper place for legal legitimacy, not peace in the air. For the rule of law even amongst the nations of the world.

Big and small and for an unending quest for a better orderly and just world where all might be favoured with ensuring peace and hopefully personal and collective self-realisation. Perhaps the most perceptive feature of Kader Asmal in the Middle East was his insistence on the value and importance of utilising international law in furthering any course of liberation,” adds Moseneke.
