Alberta’s police watchdog is looking for witnesses of a confrontation last month between Lethbridge police and a man who was placed in police custody but died in hospital over a week later. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed April 2 to investigate the use of force involved in the arrest of a 59-year-old man by Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) officers on March 23, when police received a 911 call about an unwanted man at a Lethbridge residence. Officers arrived at the residence at 11:57 p.
m. and arrested the man. The man became unresponsive shortly after he was physically restrained and placed in a police vehicle, ASIRT said.
EMS arrived and took the man to hospital, where he remained until his death on April 2. As part of the ongoing investigation, ASIRT is asking witnesses — and anyone with video of the incident — to contact investigators at 403-592-4306..
