ASHURT PNG claimed the Division 6 title in the Private Companies Netball Competition on Sunday at the Rita Flynn Courts after defeating Fincorp (1) 12-10 in a closely contested match. Despite trailing behind at one point in the first-half and struggling to contain a fast-paced Fincorp side, the law firm company didn’t give up, as they pulled through in the second-half. Fincorp’s Goal attacker Boase Momo maintained her composure against strong defensive duo Bernietha Wagun (GK) and Courtney Abel (GD).
Centre Talitha Romaso ensured that she kept the traffic flowing mid-court to feed the attackers and maintain their momentum as the team finished 7-6 at half time. Ashurst had to dig deep in second-half, and be consistent with their defence to keep the Fincorp attacking side at bay. Ashursts Goal Attacker also starred in the team’s victory managing to score 12 of the winning goals, after missing a few crucial goals, the defence held up till the end.
Team Rep Bernietha Wagun said it was a really hard game for their side: “It was a pretty hard game and was pretty close and they had us in the first-half but we really stuck out and put it together and got through the end and we beat them by 12-10. “I want to say thank you to the girls for a really good season and for showing up to training and for showing up to the games and obviously our hard work has paid off and just really want to say thank-you to the firm for their support and showing up in numbers today and to the supporters for our win.” Wagun said this not their first grand-final appearance, “we made it last year and lost by one point and but this year we won so that means we get to go up a division”.
She said the message at half-time was to keep a level head and “just because the other team is playing fast, doesn’t mean we have to play fast, what’s really important is to be steady, just take your time and seek out your options and we really pulled out in the end”..
