GRANBY— Powered by a six-goal, one assist performance from Ashlyn Lesure, Hoosac Valley girls lacrosse rolled past Granby, 14–8, on Friday in a fast-paced, physical contest to remain undefeated. Despite a sluggish start and heavy defensive pressure from Granby, Hoosac Valley (5-0) quickly found its rhythm behind explosive efforts from Lesure, Reagan Shea (4 goals, 2 assists), Maryn Cappiello (2 goals, 1 assist) and Super 7 selection Emma Meczywor (2 goals, 2 assists). “The great thing about this win is that this was kind of a gut check for us in terms of our team identity and our values,” Hoosac Valley coach Molly West said.

“They doubled Emma Meczywor, so other girls really stepped up today, just in lots of little ways to take the pressure off of Emma. Ashlyn Lesure kind of took over for us.” With Meczywor drawing defensive attention on most possessions, Lesure understood the weight of the moment and rose to meet it.

“Seeing Emma get face guarded literally the whole game, I knew that I had to step up, but I wouldn’t be able to score those goals if it wasn’t for Emma winning those draws for us, because she killed down the draw today,” Lesure said. Kalli White led the charge for Granby (3-3) with five goals, proving nearly impossible to contain once she found her rhythm in the third quarter during the Rams comeback. “And the third quarter, we just came in really strong from halftime.” The game opened with Granby setting the tone, dominating possession and striking first on a goal by White just over three minutes into the first quarter. But Lesure flipped the script with two quick goals—one assisted by Shea and the other off a free position shot—to give the Hurricanes a 2–1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Cappiello got some offense rolling with a free position goal in the second quarter before Lesure netted two goals just 38 seconds apart about midway through the period to extend the lead to 5-1. Granby momentarily halted Hoosac’s run with a goal from Ava Loughman, but the Hurricanes continued to push the pace. Meczywor—who leads the team with 26 goals and 18 assists—scored her first of the night, then assisted on back-to-back goals—one to Cappiello and the other to Lesure, who tallied her fifth goal of the half.

Anthony Roberts Meczywor’s unselfish play and field vision proved just as valuable as her scoring on Friday afternoon. “Giving a good pass to Ashlyn, Reagan, or Maryn, it’s just as cool to see them score as much as them giving me a pass to score,” Meczywor said. Coming out of the break, Hoosac stayed hot.

Lesure found Shea for a goal just over a minute into the third, and moments later, Meczywor fired in her second. The lead was stretched to 11-2 by the 10:22 mark, but Granby didn’t back down. White went on to erupt for four goals in the quarter, sparking a six-goal rally that brought the Rams within striking distance at 12–8.

Kelly-Lynn Kennedy (2 goals, 1 assist) added another for Granby during the comeback, and a timeout was called after the Hurricanes lead was sliced from nine to four in a matter of minutes. Shea scored in the final minute of the quarter to halt the Rams’ momentum, pushing the lead back to five as the third came to a close. With under eight minutes to play in the fourth, Lesure put the final stamp on her remarkable night, weaving through defenders and scoring her sixth goal of the afternoon to make it 14–8.

Up next, Hoosac Valley will look to ride the momentum into Monday’s clash with Amherst (4–2) on Apr. 21. Meanwhile, Granby will aim to regroup and snap back into the win column as they take on Lee (0–5) the same day.
