Shetland has captivated audiences throughout the years, and as series 9 concludes, Ashley Jensen has assured fans about the future of the show. The BBC detective series, set against the stunning backdrop of the Shetland islands, has been a staple on television since its debut in 2013. Even with a major cast change following Douglas Henshall's departure from the show for new roles in 2022, with actress Ashley stepping into the role of DI Ruth Calder, the series popularity hasn't waned.

Appearing on the Wednesday (December 11) morning episode of Lorraine before the current series finale, Ashley put to bed any doubts regarding the continuity of the show. When quizzed by Lorraine about a tenth season, she confirmed: "There is, yes.", reports the Daily Record .

The host expressed her surprise, noting how one can never assume a shows return, to which Ashley revealed the significant network backing: "They've actually commissioned two series off the back of last year straight away, which was a great confidence boost." Lorraine, discussing the show's success, mentioned: "Everybody watches it and it's become this huge success." Addressing the ongoing popularity, Ashley acknowledged: "It has been a while since the first series built up the fan base and now it's the same but slightly different.

" The upcoming instalment of the beloved series will see cameras rolling next year in the picturesque Shetland Isles and Scotland, with Ashley Jensen and Alison O'Donnell reprising their roles as the intrepid Detectives Ruth Calder and Alison 'Tosh' McIntosh. In a move that thrilled fans, the BBC has revealed the show's renewal for another thrilling season. Making headlines earlier in 2024, just before the premiere of its ninth series, the news put viewers on eager standby.

Ashley Jensen expressed her excitement about the new seasons, stating: "I'm thrilled I'll be returning to the Shetland Isles again to play the wonderfully complex DI Ruth Calder. The reaction to the last series was incredible and I'm excited at the prospect of unravelling more intrigue." She further enthused about the location, saying: "The Shetland Isles are breathtaking without a doubt one of the most memorable and unique filming locations I've been to.

I'm looking forward to jumping on that wee plane again and returning soon." Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV at 9pm.
