Ashalata Devi becomes the first Indian woman footballer to play 100 international matches, marking a historic achievement. New Delhi: Ashalata Devi is ready to make history as she prepares for her 100th international match for India. The 31-year-old captain of the Indian women’s football team will step onto the field on Thursday at the Dasarath Stadium in Kathmandu, becoming the first Indian woman footballer to achieve this incredible milestone.
She will face Pakistan in the SAFF Women’s Championship opening game, adding even more significance to the occasion. Ashalata began her international career in March 2011, debuting against Bangladesh during a pre-Olympics tournament in Dhaka. At just 13, she had already started playing football, and by the age of 15, she represented India in the U-17 team.
Over the years, she has grown into one of India’s most reliable players. Her journey from Manipur to becoming a national team leader is a true testament to her dedication. Recently, she has signed for East Bengal alongside Anju Tamang as the marquee signing for the upcoming IWL.
As captain, Ashalata has led India to four SAFF Women’s Championship titles and two South Asian Games gold medals. In 2019, she earned the AIFF Women’s Player of the Year award, highlighting her impact on Indian football. Despite the excitement of reaching 100 matches, she remains focused on the team’s success.
“I’m excited to play my 100th game against Pakistan, but winning the championship is our real goal,” Ashalata shared. The Indian team aims to bounce back after their disappointment in the last SAFF tournament. Ashalata, determined to reclaim the title, is confident this year will be different.
“We’ve won the SAFF Championship four times, and I want to win it again this year. It’s a special tournament for me, and we’re ready to prove ourselves,” she added. Her leadership and influence go beyond personal achievements.
Ashalata’s performances inspire the next generation of footballers in India. She has consistently shown the importance of hard work and resilience. As she steps onto the pitch for her 100th match, she not only sets a new record but also inspires young girls across the country to pursue their dreams in football.
