Arvind Kejriwal resigns as Delhi chief minister

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has resigned, submitting his resignation to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. He announced this decision after receiving bail in the alleged excise policy case. Kejriwal stated he would only return as CM if the public believes in his honesty, urging voters to decide in upcoming elections.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday tendered his resignation to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena. He had announced the decision on Sunday while addressing Aam aadmi Party workers, days after getting bail in the alleged excise policy case . The AAP supremo had said on Sunday that he would become chief minister and Manish Sisodia his deputy only when people said they were honest.

"I will resign from the Chief Minister position in two days and will not occupy the CM's chair. Elections will be held in Delhi in a few months, and I want to appeal to the people. If you believe that Kejriwal is honest, then vote for me," Kejriwal told party workers.



Days after being released from Tihar jail on bail, the AAP national convenor said that he would resign within 48 hours and sought early polls in Delhi. The call for elections in November align with the electoral calendar of Maharashtra and Jharkhand. "If you think Kejriwal is guilty, then don't vote for me.

Your every vote will be a certificate of my honesty. If you vote for me and declare that Kejriwal is honest, then only after the elections will I sit on the CM's chair. Until then, I will not sit on the CM's chair.

In the 2015 Delhi Legislative assembly elections, the AAP registered an unprecedented majority.

In subsequent 2020 elections, AAP re-emerged victorious and retained power in Delhi, following which, Kejriwal was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi for the third time in a row. Delhi excise policy case Kejriwal was arrested on March 21, 2024 by the Enforcement Directorate on allegations of a liquor scam against the Aam Aadmi Party led Delhi Government before Lok Sabha elections. On May 10, the Supreme Court ordered Kejriwal's release on interim bail until June 1, on account of campaigning for the election.

Kejriwal surrendered at Tihar Jail after the expiry of his bail period on June 2. He was granted bail by Supreme Court on September 13 with certain conditions. However, the investigation pertaining to the case still continues.
