Taking to social media platform X, Kejriwal prayed for the safety of those affected. "Powerful earthquake strikes Myanmar and Thailand.
Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone affected," he posted. The earthquake, which registered a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale, sent tremors across Myanmar and parts of Thailand, causing severe damage to buildings and infrastructure.
As per reports, Thailand’s stock exchange was temporarily shut down following the quake, and a high-rise building under construction in Bangkok's Chatuchak district collapsed, trapping 43 workers. Emergency responders rushed to the site to rescue those trapped under the rubble. PM Modi extends support Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reacted to the disaster, assuring that India was ready to provide all possible assistance.
"Concerned by the situation in the wake of the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and well-being of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance," he posted on X.
PM Modi directed Indian authorities to remain on standby and asked the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to coordinate with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand to assess the aid required. Following the disaster, Myanmar's military-led government declared a state of emergency in several regions, including Naypyitaw and Mandalay. According to state-run MRTV, the earthquake and subsequent aftershocks caused widespread destruction, with reports of collapsed buildings, damaged roads, and disrupted communication networks.
Rescue efforts have been complicated by Myanmar’s ongoing civil unrest, raising concerns about the military government's ability to coordinate relief operations effectively. Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra issued an emergency alert, urging citizens to remain vigilant for aftershocks. Authorities confirmed that two people were found dead following the collapse of the under-construction high-rise in Bangkok, while several others remain trapped.
Emergency services are working round the clock to rescue survivors. The quake’s impact was felt across multiple regions, with tremors reported in China’s Yunnan province, parts of Laos, and even some areas of northeastern India.
