The internet is divided over the democratization of art even as ChatGPT users fill the internet with the filth of AI-generated Ghibli portraits. Most of the users aren’t even aware of a large body of work from the famed Japanese animation studio. The latest fad among users has humiliatingly demeaned the decades of passionate labor of Mr.
Hayao Miyazaki’s magical universe of Spirited Away, Ponyo, Porco Rosso, Kiki’s Delivery, and other beloved films into a freaking filter. Amid all the raging debate about the ethics and legality of OpenAI releasing image generation models that evidently work by plagiarizing copyrighted content, the AI bot’s feature is now free for all users. However, artists across the globe are now doubling up their fight against the AI slop, posting hand-drawn art.
chatgpt image gen now rolled out to all free users! — Sam Altman (@sama) April 1, 2025 Reactions poured in with users asking if “ This (is) an April Fool joke? ” One user jibed, “ Yesterday: Too many people generating images. Today: Let's add everyone else. ” Another remarked, “ day 1: you're melting our servers omg.
day 2: let our devs sleep, pls omg. day 5: omg plebs, now you have it too; go nuts .” One user reminded how this was an attempt to seize private images of users for further training: “ Here is one excellent strategy to collect user data with consent .
” Another netizen dubbed the move as a “ Pandemic .” One user made the following remark. Sam, massive royalties are due to the original artists.
Human art needs to be valued and rewarded. AI art is great; it has its purpose. But it is an inferior category, a soulless depiction with zero authenticity.
It will mostly erode our brains to Jello.” Yesterday: Too many people generating images. Today: Lets add everyone else.

The movement has been in trend for a while now, ever since people started posting AI-generated sketches online using tools other than ChatGPT, including Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and others that were super popular until OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Elon Musk’s Grok, Google’s Gemini, and others made AIs readily accessible.
