Arsenal have issued a fresh injury update on captain Martin Odegaard on the morning of their Champions League test at Atalanta. Odegaard picked up an ankle injury while on international duty with Norway and subsequently missed Sunday's win over Tottenham in the north London derby. Manager Mikel Arteta said ahead of that game that the skipper was "super positive" but confirmed on Wednesday that the injury was "significant" .

He told reporters: "The scans showed that he’s got some damage, especially on one of the ligaments in the ankle. “It’s something quite significant so we’re going to lose him for a while." Arteta was reluctant to give a timeline for Odegaard's return, but added it was "hopefully not months.

" The Gunners are in Italy tonight for the start of the Champions League campaign , kicking off with a rare Thursday night game in the competition . In their traditional preview of the game published on the morning of a game, the Gunners have detailed Odegaard's injury and issued a new timeline for his recovery. It reads: "Martin Odegaard will likely be out for the next few matches with ankle ligament damage.

" Odegaard will miss Thursday night's game at Atalanta and Arteta will likely be asked again about his captain's fitness ahead of Sunday's trip to the Etihad Stadium to face champions Manchester City..
