8 Seminoles (27-7) won game one 3-1 and game two 12-1.Arnold would have thrown Friday night, but with the change in schedule, Volini threw the first game of the series and Arnold took game two. Seminoles head coach Link Jarrett wanted his team to have better pitch recognition in the series, and FSU responded with 21 hits and 15 runs in the doubleheader.
Game one: Volini tosses a seven-inning gemIn the first game, Volini tossed seven innings where he struck out five, walked four and allowed one earned run on two hits. He was electric on the mound, shutting down the Hookie lineup throughout the day. After a Max Williams leadoff double, Myles Bailey was hit by a pitch and Brody DeLamielleure walk, Nathan Cymela came to the plate with the bases loaded in the fourth inning.
He was hit by a pitch to score Williams from third base. Virginia Tech responded quickly in the bottom of the fourth with a grounded fielder's choice to third, the only Virginia Tech run of the game.The game wouldn't stay tied for long, as Alex Lodise hit an RBI single in the fifth inning before a wild pitch scored Max Williams later in the inning.
Volini threw two more shutdown innings before Joe Charles finished the game with two scoreless innings. Game two: Arnold shines, offense explodes for 12 runsArnold dazzled in game two with seven innings thrown. He struck out nine, walked a pair and allowed an earned run on four hits.
FSU gave Arnold run support with four home runs, with Cal Fisher hitting the first in the second inning. With 2 outs and a 3-1 count, Fisher blasted one over the wall for his fourth home run of the season. In the third, Lodise hit a solo home run, again with two outs, before another two-out home run in the fourth inning from DeLamielleure, giving the Seminoles an early 3-0 advantage.
Like in game one, Virginia Tech's lone run came in the fourth on a double from Henry Cooke. The Seminoles poured in six runs from the sixth inning to the ninth. A Drew Faurot solo home run in the sixth kicked things off, his eighth of the season.
In the seventh, Lodise hit an RBI double, and he quickly scored as Williams drove him home with an RBI single. With the bases loaded in the eighth, Chase Williams walked in a run before Gage Harrelson was hit by a pitch to score another. Lodise hit a fielder's choice to score the final run of the eighth.
After loading the bases, the Seminoles added three more runs. A Fisher fielder's choice scored one before a Hunter Carns double scored another. The final run came from a wild pitch to make it 12-1.
John Abraham replaced Arnold in the eighth, and he retired the side to start his relief outing. He finished with two scoreless and hitless innings with four strikeouts. The Seminoles will go for the sweep on Sunday with a noon first pitch.
