Arnold Schwarzenegger has lifted the lid on an unusual health drink he makes himself every day to boost his protein intake. The Terminator actor opened up to Men's Health about his diet and workout regime in the wake of his 202 heart surgery. Now 77, the Austrian-born actor and former politician still stays in great shape, working out at least once a day and eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

But it was his protein drink he makes himself every day that did raise a few eyebrows. Along with some fairly routine ingredients such as almond milk, cherry juice, and a banana, the former Mr Universe winner says he also adds a whole egg into the blender. And by whole egg, he literally means the whole egg - shell and all.

"This is how I make my protein drink - there's nothing special about it. I just put almond milk - just a little bit - and tart cherry juice for muscle soreness. Then you go in with a banana, and a whole egg.

And I like to go in with the whole egg," he said. "Now, this drink you could literally sell at any health bar, or any other bar for that matter. I sometimes put in Schnapps or tequila.

" As unpalatable as that might sound, there might actually be some method behind the madness. Eggshells contain calcium carbonate, protein, and minerals to help support your immune system. Just half an egg shell provides enough calcium for your recommended daily allowance.

The eggshell membrane may benefit your joint health too as it mainly consists of protein in the form of collagen, which can potentially support and benefit your joints. Not everyone was convinced though, with one person saying in the comments: "A whole egg shell - only the Terminator would do this!" Another said: "I think that egg shell must have some side effects on your health." A third added: "That egg is going to hurt on the way out," while a fourth said: "Olla! Idol.

My concern would be the egg shell cuz he might get his stomach wounded." The video also included a quick tour of his fridge, which included eggs and beef, but also grapes, strawberries, greens, blackberries, and his favourite, water melon. He continued: "I'm health conscious now.

I wasn't always health conscious because when you are young, you get away with a lot of things. Now I eat more oatmeal, greens, vegetables, and healthy foods. "I stay away more from meats, animal products, animal proteins - because there is this misconception that that is the only way to get big and strong.

Now I've backed off that, and I feel much better being more on greens." Schwarzenegger said that he does also take supplements. However, he said he uses them literally as a supplement to an already-good diet, rather than relying on them to supply him with all of his nutritional needs.

He also says he works out every morning, than goes for a 45-minute bike ride. He does not lift exceptionally heavy weights now after being told to cut back by his doctor after his a ortic valve re-replacement in 2020. He also sometimes works out in the evening as well, but does also allow himself a cheat day.

" Cheat days come up quite frequently. The key thing is to remember that for every calorie you eat, you will have to burn it off - nobody is going to do it for you," he said. "Of course I cook too.

My favourite thing to cook is a fillet steak. My bodybuilding friends come over but they won't eat the delicious food because they all want to look like me - but it's never going to happen!".
