Army personnel shoots self in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri

An army jawan reportedly died by suicide using his service rifle while on duty in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district. This follows a separate incident where a policeman fatally shot a colleague before taking his own life in Udhampur district, raising concerns about mental health within the security forces.

NEW DELHI: An Army jawan allegedly shot himself dead with his service rifle in Jammu and Kashmir 's Rajouri district late Tuesday, officials said. The incident occurred when the army personnel, Havaldar Indesh Kumar was on sentry duty at his camp in Anjanwali village, located in the Manjakote area. The reasons behind his actions remain unclear, the officials said.

Police have initiated inquest proceedings to investigate the case, they added. Earlier on Sunday, in a separate incident, another in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district shot his colleague with an AK-47 assault rifle before turning the weapon on himself, officials said. The incident occurred while the two policemen, along with another colleague, were traveling from Sopore in north Kashmir to the Subsidiary Training Centre (STC) in Talwara, Reasi district, in the Jammu region.



Udhampur SSP Amod Ashok Nagpure confirmed the events, stating, the accused constable used his AK-47 assault rifle in the firing. "The accused constable shot dead his colleague before killing himself. Initial probe reveals it is a case of fratricide and suicide ," he added.
