FORWARD Adam Armstrong insisted Saints need to build on their win against Everton to "really get going" this season. Russell Martin's side secured their first victory of the Premier League season on Saturday thanks to Armstrong's late goal in a 1-0 win over the Toffees. Southampton needed VAR to hold onto the three points - Beto's would-be equaliser was chalked off for offside after a lengthy delay.

The result also ended Southampton's 22-game winless run in the top-flight, leaving just Ipswich and Wolves without a victory this season. "It's massive," Armstrong beamed when speaking to the Daily Echo . "We knew it was going to be a tough game.

They are very direct in the way they're playing. "We created chances, I thought we were excellent as a team to get the result. (We) really stuck at it.

We had a bit of luck on our side as well and got the three points, which is unbelievable. Crossbar ➡️ counter ➡️ CARNAGE 🤯 pic.twitter.

What a moment. We have to take this in our stride now. We have to go to Wolves next week and get a good result before the international break.

"We're trying to win every game. Every game's big. I think the gaffers touched on that.

There's no easy game. I thought the lads were excellent and it's something that we really needed. "I think we knew after the Stoke game we could have been a lot more clinical.

We could have been three or four up (against Stoke). Adam Armstrong and Saints boss Russell Martin (Image: PA) "When you don't take your chances in any league, it comes back to bite you. The main thing was we got the win on Tuesday and got the win today.

" Armstrong's late goal was his second in consecutive games after a run of seven matches without one - his last goal before that was the winner at Wembley against Leeds United. He demonstrated his final third movement which has so often been praised by Saints boss Martin over the year. Armstrong played down the significance of opening his account for the season four days prior in the Carabao Cup against Stoke City.

"I knew there was still a bit of time to play, so we had to switch back on straight away. The way that we dug in was incredible.

"I think I was just taking every game as it comes. I think we had confidence from the Man City game. "The praise that we got from their players and staff was incredible.

We have to take that momentum now into every game and really get going.".
