Area Girls Basketball: Pirates pull off first win

VERNDALE — Aspen Orlando scored 16 points and Kaija Madsen finished with 12 as the Verndale Pirates rallied from a three-point halftime deficit to defeat the Laporte Wildcats 37-35 in a Section 5-1A game Friday, Jan. 24. The Pirates outscored the Wildcats 22-17 to break a 15-game losing streak and secure their first win of the season.

Pierz’s Abigail Virnig finished with nine points. STAPLES — Clara Maros led the Staples-Motley Cardinals with 13 points as they lost 75-41 to the Park Rapids Panthers in a Heart O’Lakes Conference game Friday, Jan. 24.

S-M’s Ellen Lange chipped in nine points. WALKER — Mimi Bueckers recorded 16 points for the Pine River-Backus Tigers in a 75-44 Northland Conference loss to the formally ranked Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves Friday, Jan. 24.

ADVERTISEMENT PRB’s Sawyer Tulenchik added 10 points. LITTLE FALLS — Malin Youngberg scored nine points to lead the Little Falls Flyers in a 47-45 Granite Ridge Conference loss to the Albany Huskies Friday, Jan. 24.

The Flyers’ Madisyn Whitford scored eight points followed by Sam Pint and Reese Becker with seven. GLENWOOD — Jada Dykhoff tallied 17 points for the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines in a 62-34 loss to Class 2A’s eighth-ranked Minnewaska Lakers Friday, Jan. 24.
