President Donald Trump’s administration is offering federal workers the chance to take a “deferred resignation” where they resign now but get paid through September. With some exceptions, federal employees received the offer in an email Tuesday. The deferred resignation is part of a number of directives Trump has issued concerning the federal workforce in his first week back in office.

“At this time, we cannot give you full assurance regarding the certainty of your position or agency,” the letter to federal employees reads, “but should your position be eliminated you will be treated with dignity and will be afforded the protections in place for such positions.” The offer is inspired by a reformed federal workforce centered around in-person work, restored accountability for employees with policy-making authority, restored accountability for senior career executives and a focus on merit in the federal hiring process, according to the administration.
