WHEN the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court handed down its sentence in the case of the police officer who punched a deaf e-hailing rider, I was left scratching my head. A RM1,000 fine? That’s it? No jail time, no community service, just a one-time fine? What message does this send to the public? That in Malaysia a punch in the face costs only a slap on the wrist? The officer apologised through his lawyer, who also said the officer is a devoted son who takes care of his elderly parents. Does this merit a light sentence?.
