Arctic Warrior host Guy Martin revealed how he was only diagnosed with Aspergers' syndrome because he was driving a former girlfriend "crackers". In his upcoming Channel 4 show Arctic Warrior, he joins the Royal Marines 200 miles into the Arctic Circle. Viewers will be keen to find out if Guy has the mettle to cope with one of the world's most unforgiving climates in the role of a special operations commando.
The two-part series commences at 9pm on December 11, with the second episode following on December 12. At 43 years old, Guy has opened up about being diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome later in life. Grimsby Live reports he does not like to work from a script, and works by responding to questions from crew members off-camera.
Guy explained that he had been persuaded by a girlfriend at the time to seek professional help. ' Anyway, I sat there for a day, and it turned out it was a form of autism: Asperger's." He added: “It’s true I’ve been diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, but I would say: ‘What a load of tripe’.
They try to put names to it — ‘Oh, he’s like that because of this’. Everyone’s different. We’re all different.
" Asperger's syndrome is often associated with difficulties in social interaction and restricted interests, but it can also come with unique strengths. The NHS describes Asperger's (or Asperger syndrome) as a term some use for autistic individuals who have average or above-average intelligence. Guy commented on his own experience: "The way I look at it is that maybe having that is why I am the way I am.
Maybe that is all down to the autistic side. I don't know. "If there are any benefits to having it, it's that you just get your head down and get on with things.
I apply that to the way I work. If you've got an awkward job at work, you just get your head down until it's sorted." According to his website, Guy Martin jumped at the chance to join the Royal Marines at Camp Viking at their winter training centre in Norway, within the Arctic Circle.
The website recounts: "Guy threw himself at the opportunity, plunging into the icy waters, marching up mountains, camping out in the wilderness, calling in live fire from a helicopter gunship, conducting an amphibious raid and fighting alongside a strike group in a simulated sniper attack. "He hasn't shut up about it since he got back. A proper thanks to the UK Commando Force who according to Guy 'have taken me, Mr.
Average, and got me to do some of the most amazing things of my life." "'I honestly wish I'd joined up at 16, it would have been great for me. They're hoofing.
