Chennai: An electric vehicle charger developed by IIT Madras-incubated startup Plugzmart, capable of charging high-end cars and heavy vehicles in 20 minutes, received Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) certification. A release said that Plugzmart was the first startup in the country to receive certification for a charger with a controller and programmable logic controller (PLC) built in-house. Several startups have received ARAI for their EV chargers, but controller and PLC modules were mostly imported.

In Plugzmart's 240kW DC fast EV charger, the hardware and software were developed in-house, apart from the controller and PLC module, reducing reliance on imported components and promoting ‘ Make in India ' for the EV sector. The development has the potential to contribute significantly towards India reducing import dependency in the EV sector, officials at the startup said. The fast charger is designed for high-power EV charging, suitable for high-end four-wheelers, commercial fleets, and highway corridors.

A smart power distribution system optimises energy usage and prevents grid overload. The charger, which supports multiple vehicles simultaneously, features AI-driven optimisation to predict and prevent charger failures and ensure high uptime. "The EV charging technology in India is evolving with innovations in fast charging, smart load management and indigenous charger development.

The country is moving towards high-power DC fast chargers, with a focus on locally manufactured solutions to reduce dependency on imports and lower costs. Our indigenous controller and PLC modules can play a key role in the country reducing its imports in the EV sector," said Vivek Samynathan, founder and CEO, Plugzmart..
