Apple's forthcoming A19 chip for the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air, along with the A19 Pro chip for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, will be produced using TSMC's advanced third-generation 3nm process known as "N3P," as stated by analyst Jeff Pu in a recent technology-focused research note from the Hong Kong-based investment bank Haitong. twitter.com/S6OAkNeANk — MacRumors.com (@MacRumors) November 18, 2024 In contrast, the existing A18 and A18 Pro chips utilized in the iPhone 16 series are manufactured with TSMC's second-generation 3nm process, referred to as "N3E," while the A17 Pro chip found in the iPhone 15 Pro models is produced using TSMC's initial 3nm process, "N3B.
" The "N3P" process is viewed as a refinement over "N3E," indicating that chips fabricated with this newer technology will exhibit enhanced transistor density. Although this development is anticipated, it suggests that the iPhone 17 models will deliver slightly improved performance and energy efficiency relative to the iPhone 16 models. Earlier reports have indicated that TSMC is set to commence mass production of chips utilizing the N3P process in the latter half of 2024.
Furthermore, Apple is projected to adopt TSMC's inaugural 2nm process for the A20 chips in the iPhone 18 models by 2026. Additionally, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Slim are expected to incorporate ProMotion support, as ongoing speculation regarding high refresh rate capabilities continues.
