Notably, some English-speaking nations, such as Australia and Canada, do not yet have access to this feature, as Apple is in the process of obtaining regulatory approval in certain areas.

Sleep apnea is a potentially serious condition characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. The detection feature utilizes the accelerometer of the Apple Watch to "track minor wrist movements that correlate with disruptions in normal breathing patterns," as stated by Apple. If these interruptions are frequent over several nights, they may indicate the presence of sleep apnea, according to the company.

Users of the Apple Watch can monitor their nightly Breathing Disturbances through the Health app on their iPhones, with these disturbances categorized as either "elevated" or "not elevated." Apple asserts that this feature was created using "advanced machine learning" techniques and a "comprehensive data set from clinical-grade sleep apnea assessments," which was subsequently validated through a "clinical study." According to Apple's specifications, the feature is designed to identify signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea in individuals aged 18 and older who have not previously received a diagnosis of the condition.

FDA Approves Sleep Apnea Detection Feature for Apple Watches Those with a Series 9 or Ultra 2 can upgrade to watchOS 11 to get sleep apnea detection. It will also work on the Apple Watch Series 10 when it launches on Sept. 20.
