The upcoming Apple Watch Ultra is anticipated to feature satellite connectivity, as reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Apple initially launched satellite connectivity for off-grid messaging with the iPhone 14, a feature that has since been incorporated into the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16, but has yet to be available on any Apple Watch. Initially, satellite connectivity was restricted to emergency text messages; however, with the introduction of iOS 18, Apple has broadened this capability to allow users to send messages to any recipient.
Apple aims to leverage this satellite feature to motivate Apple Watch users to upgrade to the new Apple Watch Ultra, which is expected to launch in September 2025. This connectivity will also enhance Apple's competitive stance against companies like Garmin, which specialize in dedicated satellite devices for off-grid emergencies. The Apple Watch Ultra targets outdoor enthusiasts such as hikers and scuba divers, and the addition of satellite connectivity would provide an extra layer of safety for activities conducted away from cellular coverage.
Currently, Apple does not impose charges for satellite connectivity, and it remains unclear what fees, if any, may be introduced. All iPhones come with two years of complimentary connectivity, a policy likely to extend to the Apple Watch Ultra as well. Furthermore, Apple plans to discontinue the use of Intel cellular modems in future Apple Watch models, opting instead for technology from MediaTek.
