Apple is intensifying its efforts to develop a blood pressure monitoring feature for the Apple Watch, with potential availability as early as 2025, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. This health enhancement has been in development for several years, and there were initial expectations for its introduction in 2024. Rather than providing precise systolic and diastolic measurements, the feature is designed to monitor trends in blood pressure and issue alerts if hypertension is detected.

Hypertension is often referred to as a silent killer due to its tendency to remain undiagnosed, which can result in significant health complications, including heart damage and mortality. High blood pressure frequently presents few symptoms until it reaches an advanced stage, making early detection through the Apple Watch potentially life-saving. The device currently has capabilities to detect atrial fibrillation and perform one-lead ECG readings.

Additionally, it includes a blood oxygen monitoring feature, although this is currently disabled in U.S. models due to patent disputes.

Gurman indicates that Apple plans to incorporate this feature into the Apple Watch Ultra 3, and it is expected to be available in the standard Apple Watch model in 2025. Apple Watch Could Get Blood Pressure Monitoring in 2025 pic.twitter.

In 2022, Apple faced challenges related to accuracy during testing, although these issues may have been resolved. The company is also pursuing noninvasive blood glucose monitoring, but that feature is not yet ready for release.
