Tariff Trafficking On Airplane Mode

The Trump Tariff war has major repercussions that tech giants with their assembly lines in non-American companies were hardly prepared for. The Made in USA clarion call by the 47th President of the United States, while imposing reciprocal tariffs on its go-to production house, China, will now cost companies like Apple dearly. Amid the fiasco, the Tim Cook-led company has reportedly flown five aircraft filled with iPhones from India and other markets.

The operation was done in late March, ahead of the Liberation Day Tariff announcement by Donald Trump. Per a TOI report, Apple shipped stocks from its manufacturing and assembling units in India to the warehouses in the USA. This would ensure the iPhone prices will temporarily not suffer the brutal brunt of Trump’s tariff.

The prices will be hiked eventually. China was slapped with a 54% tariff on April 5th, whereas India earned a 26% reciprocal tariff. Amid China’s retaliatory tariff against the reciprocal Tariff, the billionaire president has imposed a whopping 104% tariff back at Beijing.

Yet another asked, “ How is that different than smuggling cocaine into the country if you really think about it...

? ” A handful of users made rough estimates regarding the valuation of the iPhone shipments. “ If we assume around 400k iPhones made it onto each cargo plane (low-end max capacity for each) and go with around a $1000 valuation for each phone, those planes were carrying around $2 billion+ in product, ” concluded one user. Another estimated, “ Approximately 4 million iPhones (4,069,765) could fit in 5 Boeing 747-8 Freighters, assuming they’re packed efficiently and the plane is loaded to its maximum payload capacity.
