Apple is reportedly in the process of developing a new iPad Pro model, which is currently in the "late testing" phase within the organization. A well-informed journalist has indicated that this device will likely be among the first to utilize Apple's forthcoming M5 chipset. It is anticipated that four variants of the M5-equipped iPad Pro are set to enter production, potentially starting in the latter half of this year.
Mark Gurman from Bloomberg provided insights into Apple's upcoming iPad models in the latest edition of the Power On newsletter. He asserts that the new M5 iPad Pro model is expected to feature only a minor upgrade in specifications, while its overall design may closely resemble that of the existing model. It is worth noting that Apple updated its M4 iPad Pro in May 2024, making it the first iPad in the lineup to incorporate an OLED display, along with a new landscape front camera and a slimmer profile.
Aside from the new M5 system-on-chip, the anticipated M5 iPad Pro is believed to maintain these design characteristics. Currently, four tablet variants—J817, J818, J820, and J821—are undergoing testing and are projected to begin production in the second half of 2025. This aligns with earlier statements from industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo regarding the expected timeline for mass production of the M5-powered iPad Pro.
In addition to the iPad models, Apple is also said to be working on new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models featuring the same chipset, which are not expected to see significant design changes either. Furthermore, reports indicate that Apple is in the early stages of developing iPad models powered by the M6 chipset, which may include the company's proprietary modems.
