Apple is set to launch its first batch of Apple Intelligence features with the upcoming iOS 18.1 update, scheduled for October 28. However, ahead of this rollout, industry expert Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has managed expectations, indicating that these initial features might not impress as much as those from competitors like Google, OpenAI, and Meta.

Mark my words, after 5 months of hype from Apple and others about Apple Intelligence, when it actually comes out next week, there is going to be a lot of “that’s it?” or “where is it?” from consumers.— Mark Gurman (@markgurman) October 20, 2024 Evaluating Apple's AI Progress While Apple Intelligence is expected to improve over time, Gurman noted that some employees believe the company is more than two years behind its rivals. An internal study revealed that OpenAI’s ChatGPT is 25% more accurate than Siri, and can answer 30% more questions.

This highlights the challenges Apple faces in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Despite these hurdles, Apple continues to hold a strong market position, bolstered by its reputation and resources. Gurman pointed out that Apple’s ability to introduce features to a large user base provides a significant competitive advantage.

The company is also working to ensure that more devices will support Apple Intelligence, with the goal of having all screen-equipped devices capable of using this technology by 2026. Upcoming Devices and Their Impact The next iPhone SE and the entry-level iPad are set to play crucial roles in this expansion. Expected to launch in March 2025, the new iPhone SE will support Apple Intelligence features, making them accessible to a wider audience.

Apple is also looking to integrate these features into the Apple Watch, Vision Pro headset, and various new home devices, further enhancing its ecosystem. Gurman emphasized that Apple’s tightly integrated hardware and software will enable quick updates, which could make it tough for competitors like Samsung and Google to keep up. This seamless integration will help Apple leverage its existing user base to promote its AI capabilities.

Some have made dubious claims that Apple Intelligence is already creating a consumer revolution that will spark a massive quarter. But Apple’s AI glory is still years out. If iPhone 16 is a hit this year, it will probably be because of everything but AI.

There are also whispers of two versions: a standard model and a larger Plus variant similar to the iPhone 14 Plus.

Both are expected to have a single rear camera and a slightly smaller mute switch compared to the iPhone 14, while keeping the same button layout. On the performance front, the new iPhone SE is likely to be powered by the A18 chip, introduced with the iPhone 16, and may come with at least 8GB of RAM to effectively support Apple Intelligence features. As Apple gears up to unveil its new features and devices, the landscape of AI in smartphones is poised for change.

While the initial offerings may not match those of competitors, Apple’s long-term vision and integrated ecosystem position it well for future advancements in AI. The upcoming iPhone SE is expected to be a key player in making Apple Intelligence more accessible to a broader audience.
